Heyo! Question! What method did you use for making your sword? The sword and scabbard both turned out really nice! =O I'm thinking of making a sword for a steam punk costume, but still tossing around ideas for how to go about it.
The blade is a strip of plastic. It's got a little flex that way, but since it stays in the scabbard most of the time, I'm not too worried about it. The downside to making the blade out of plastic is when I beveled the edges, the I couldn't get it entirely smooth even with extra sanding. I made the shape of the bell guard out of fun foam and wire and just added a ton of bondo and fiberglass to make it strong and thicken it out. The hit's just a wooden dowel. I went to my dad to rivet the blade to the hilt, so that part's pretty solid.
I'm eventually making a steampunk costume too! What are you thinking of doing with yours?
My uncle works at a prosthetics place, so he gave me some of their scrap plastic. The sheet the blade was made from is I think a quarter inch thick (too lazy to go double check, lol). I could ask him sometime what kind of plastic it is for you if you want.
Oh, that sounds cool! I'm still tossing around ideas for mine. Been doing that for about a year now. I think I've decided on making two costumes instead of trying to combine them.
=O Cool! That would be awesome If not I'm sure I could search around Home Depot or the intarwebs for what's available ^_^ Thanks so much!
I've been tossing around ideas for about a year now too, lol XD I'm finally making myself get to it. :3 Two costume, oooh That'll be neat. Exciting! We're going to have to meet up sometime next year and walk around and be steampunky. And we'll also have to meet up to duel as Raphael and Xianghua, if you bring him next year XD
Thanks! Yeah, I went into that fair hoping to find a decent pocket watch, and instead I returned home with a couple pairs of Integra styled glasses, some steampunk looking welding goggles, and a pith helmet. It was a good day.
